UNESCO – Historic monuments for the whole world

Which houses in the city are your favourites? Old or new ones? A lot of it has to do with taste, but there are historic buildings which are listed under preservation protection. They are not allowed to be demolished or changed, even if they no longer look elegant or modern. These structures speak of a life in earlier times. A special distinction for historic buildings is UNESCO World Heritage status. UNESCO is English and stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. All over the world, there are buildings that UNESCO has included in its list of truly remarkable buildings of humanity. In Trier and the surrounding region, there are even nine UNESCO World Heritage buildings. Do you know them all? They were added to this list of world-famous monuments forty years ago, in 1986.

How many UNESCO-buildings are there in the whole world? How many would you guess?
